RSM Peterborough is in Solidarity with Victims of Racist Attacks

RSM Peterborough stands in solidarity with the members of Masjid Al-Salaam, Muslims and people of colour throughout Peterborough and the Kawarthas in the face of an attack on the community’s Mosque this past Saturday Night. An arson attack just hours after the community was celebrating in the space is a clear message of racism and islamophobia. Such attacks by reactionary elements in our community cannot be tolerated. Just as RSM and PRAC Comrades and  have taken an active role in confronting the PEGIDA fascists in Montreal and Toronto, the RSM calls on all revolutionary and progressive forces in Peterborough to condemn and confront racist ideas and actions wherever they arise. There has been a group formed to support the Community!

The international context of western imperialism and reactionary ISIS forces confronting each other cannot be ignored, but it must be remembered that both these groups seek to dominate and oppress the revolutionary classes of the world. Reactionaries and white supremacists will always use conflict to justify their oppression of and violence toward People of Colour and others. Lal Salaam/ Red Salute to the revolutionary forces that are globally confronting reactionary Western Imperialism and Supremacy and Fundamentalist Islam. We cannot forget that no matter which of these forces win it will be the proletarians and refugees who suffer.

Solidarity with the Muslims of Peterborough!

Solidarity with the victims of racist and fascist attacks!

Down with Fascism!

Down with Racism!

Down with Islamophobia!

York friends and comrades, please come to this event to learn, share and strategize!
Our university continues to deny that racism and racial profiling occurs in campus. Those who deny the reality of colonialism and white supremacy are the very same people who uphold it — from our Deans, professors, registrar and campus police!
We have to show up and demonstrate not only that white supremacy and colonialism exist, but in fact, students actively organize against them! This campus is ours! Let’s continue to transform it as a site of class struggle!

Working-class universities like York are sites of racism and colonialism as well as of resistance, resurgence and community building. Recent examples include the University’s inaction in the wake of racist Immigration Watch flyers, and the antiblack responses to sexual assaults on campus, including racial profiling of Black students, staff and faculty and the demonizing of the surrounding Jane and Finch community, which the University plays an active role in gentrifying. This conversation between Black, Indigenous and racialized students and teachers explores what an anti-racist and anti-colonial education might look like that counters the pathologization, criminalization and appropriation of our lives and knowledges by the academic industrial complex.

RSM-York Endorses This Letter by RacismWatch@York in light of the White Supremacy Posters Going up Around Campus

“August 14, 2014

To Mamdouh Shoukri and York University,

This week, students, faculty and staff at York University were attacked by blatant racism on campus.  Flyers created by Immigration Watch Canada (IWC) depicting students of colour as a threat to white Canada were circulated on the York University Keele campus.  Similar flyers were also distributed across the York Village, where many of the university’s students live. IWC is a notorious white supremacist group which was in the news earlier this month for flyering racist anti-immigration posters across the city of Brampton.  Their expansion into York University indicates an escalation of their racist calls for a white nation.  Their white supremacist demands include severe reductions in immigration, limitations on the entry of racialized peoples into Canada, and no recognition of the historical and ongoing colonization of the indigenous peoples of this land.

As students, faculty members, and community members of colour at York University we are deeply affected by the IWC’s abrasive actions, which are designed to intimidate and immobilize communities of colour.  The language that people of colour are “invading” Canada, used by the IWC flyers instigates a mood of panic.  This is a historically recurring narrative of white supremacy and colonization in Canada.  Historical and contemporary examples include the refused entry of the Komagata Maru, the “yellow peril” propaganda and internment of Japanese Canadians, fear mongering around refugees arriving on the Ocean Lady and MV Sun Sea, and the changes to temporary migrant labour laws that now systematically deny workers of colour access to services and pathways to citizenship.”
